Delight In Dead Deals: How Sovereign Builders Reframe Natural Roadblocks

June 23, 20267 min read

The moment a door slams in your face in business, ministry, or life, you are immediately confronted with two very distinct choices. You can sit down on the pavement and whine about the frustration of the disappointment, or you can step into your supernatural authority, work the problem, and realize that God is simply rearranging the floor plan for something better.

For most entrepreneurs, a dead deal feels like a structural failure. But for a purpose-driven builder operating in true partnership with God, a natural roadblock is nothing more than a strategic setup.

The Epidemic of the Permission Slip

Recently, my wife Davina and I spent an incredible week traveling across the country. The first half of the trip was spent at a massive real estate conference where she was leading her team from the front. While she was deep in her training sessions, I set up camp in the hotel room, managing the pipeline for my financial firm.

Between sessions and late into the evening, I had the chance to talk with high-level, top-producing agents who had invested heavily to be in that room. As I listened to their dreams—writing books, launching podcasts, scaling enterprises—I noticed a massive epidemic humming beneath the surface.

The issue wasn’t their work ethic, their talent, or their access to strategy. It was an underlying pandemic of limiting beliefs. Over and over again, I heard variations of the same phrase: "I just don't feel qualified."

The enemy doesn’t need to defeat you in the open market. He just has to convince you that you don't possess the credentials to step into the territory that God has already assigned to your name.

When you are trapped by the fear of being unqualified, you will willingly stand at the back of the longest lines in life, waiting for an external, worldly stamp of approval before you claim your next level. You fall back into an employee mindset, waiting for someone to hand you a permission slip.

But a mature, executive heir doesn't wait for the world to qualify him. He recognizes that his qualification was permanently signed in the blood of Jesus and sealed by the Holy Spirit inside him. You already have your mandate.

Buying Back Velocity

Right after that real estate event, we hopped on another plane down to Orlando for my financial firm's senior broker retreat. We were blessed with a full day at Epcot Center, and as a thrill-ride seeker, I immediately looked up the standby line for the Guardians of the Galaxy ride. It was astronomical.

After spending hours sweating in a concrete queue line for our first attraction, Davina and I looked at each other and realized we had already lost a massive amount of momentum. We made an immediate executive decision to look into the premium "Lightning Lane" passes.

Financially, the cost of those passes was nearly the exact same price as buying brand-new park tickets all over again. Most people would look at that expense and say, "That's too expensive. I'll just wait it out."But we realized that our peace, our focus, and our time together were far more valuable than the cash we were exchanging.

The Amateur MindsetThe Sovereign Builder Mindset

Tries to save every penny by wasting hours in line.

Willingly spends the money to buy back velocity.

Lets the environment control their momentum.

Dynamically protects their focus and peace.

Relies entirely on the front gate pass.

Knows how to work the problem when things go slow.

An amateur entrepreneur hoards capital at the expense of time, while an experienced, sovereign builder understands how to leverage capital to protect momentum. Buying the lightning lane is an intentional decision to value your velocity.

Love Logic: The Unbeatable Marketplace Weapon

By the end of the night, the concrete was packed with thousands of people gearing up for the 9:00 PM fireworks show. Davina and I didn't care about the fireworks—we were hot, sweating, and wanted to get indoors to find a great meal and an artisanal, well-crafted cocktail.

I researched the premier spot in the area and walked up to the host stand, only to be stopped cold: "We are completely full. Reservation only."The host told us there was no data they could check; everything was automated through the app, and there was no way to help us.

It would have been incredibly easy to bring hot, frustrated, pessimistic energy to the next host stand we approached. But across my career, I have learned an unshakeable spiritual law: Honoring people and leading with genuine love is a weapon that never fails in the marketplace.

I walked up to the next host stand, smiled, and was completely transparent. I honored her time, explained that it was our first time navigating the park's reservation system, and asked if there was any human way she could squeeze just the two of us in at the bar.

Because of that posture, she didn't hide behind an app. She started actively working the problem with us, calculating parties that were lingering versus reservations that were running late. Within minutes, they called our name.

We were ushered into a simulated outer space restaurant called Space 220. Because we were willing to pivot rather than panic, we ended up sitting directly in front of a bartender named Christopher—who turned out to be one of the most famous, highly followed, master mixologists in the state. People literally plan their entire vacations hoping to roll the dice and land a spot at his bar, and we slid right into it without a blueprint simply because we protected our attitude.

God knows the structural desires of your heart, and He loves to turn a closed natural door into a premium supernatural experience if you don't compromise your alignment in the gap.

When Business Deals Fall Apart

That exact same day, right in the middle of walking through the park, we received a deeply disheartening phone call.

For weeks, Davina had been doing her due diligence on a massive investment property opportunity. We had spent considerable capital and time on home inspections, moisture testing, and getting contractor quotes to scale our real estate asset pipeline. We were in the final throes of signing the official paperwork.

Out of nowhere, the sellers called and announced they were backing out of the contract to hold onto the asset for a few more years. Just like that, a massive source of vision and excitement was completely dead.

In the natural, it is devastating. Your flesh immediately wants to lean into the grievance. But as executive, authorized sons and daughters (Whios), we have to manage two realities simultaneously: we acknowledge the objective natural facts of the situation, but we instantly apply our supernatural authority to them.

We immediately anchored our minds in Romans 8:28: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

If your deal dies, it is always due to one of two spiritual realities:

  1. It was fool's gold. God saw a hidden structural issue or a trap further down the road that you couldn't see from the shore, and His love protected you from it.

  2. It was a necessary practice run. God needed to train your muscles, your contracts, and your ability to scale vision so that you are perfectly positioned for the premium asset He actually has lined up for you.

Keep Knocking

Matthew 7:7 says: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”But if you stop knocking the absolute millisecond the first door locks, you prove that you are still operating with the fragile mindset of a slave rather than the unshakeable certainty of a son.

Stop bringing hot, frustrated, anxious energy into your marketplace operations when roadblocks hit your desk. Get curious. Smile at the closed door, step up to the next opportunity with absolute honor, and trust that the ultimate Business Partner is currently outperforming your expectations behind the scenes.
