Discerning the Voice: Desert Seasons, Audible Calls, and Staying the Course with Chad Wallen
In a world full of noise, competing opportunities, and constant pressure to scale, discerning the voice of God is the single most critical discipline a Master Builder can possess.
When God calls you out of corporate stability into full-time ministry or entrepreneurship, it rarely aligns with worldly logic. In this conversation on The Jesse Wood Show, Chad Wallen, founder of Advanced Camp USA, shares his journey of stepping away from corporate America after hearing the audible direction of the Lord, navigating seasons of silence, and learning to discern divine purpose amidst spiritual warfare.
1. Stepping Out on the Water: Hearing the Call
Chad spent years volunteering and mentoring young men who grew up without fathers in the home. At age 37, while working in corporate America, he received a clear, undeniable instruction from the Lord: step into full-time ministry, serve the fatherless, and exit corporate life by June 14th.
Specifics Over Ambiguity: God provided a specific date and financial target. When you step out in obedience, God orchestrates the details in ways that leave no room for human self-reliance.
The Divine Offset: By the deadline, donor pledges fell slightly short of the target. Simultaneously, Chad’s wife received an unsolicited promotion at work—yielding exactly $165 per month more than the exact amount needed to cover the shortfall.
Fatherly Provision: God operates as a loving Father providing for His children, not a distant taskmaster requiring you to manipulate outcomes on your own strength.
2. The Purpose of Desert Seasons
Stepping into your calling does not eliminate dry spells. Chad expanded Advanced Camp USA across four states by operating strictly on divine direction—scouting cities like Cape Coral, Florida, and Stephenville, Texas, only when given the green light. Yet, even with proven fruit, seasons of silence and opposition occurred.
Without the contrast of a desert, you cannot fully appreciate the movement and direction God provides. Dry seasons prevent complacency and force builders back into deeper dependence on the Father.
During a severe eight-month dark season, Chad faced intense identity attacks—thoughts telling him he was failing his family and that his ministry was useless. Out of that struggle, God birthed a 30-day devotional on true identity in Christ now distributed to every young man entering Advanced Camp. God never wastes a wilderness season; He builds the builder before He builds the vision.
3. Distinguishing Good Things from Great Things
The enemy rarely stops a driven builder with obvious evil; he halts them with good distractions.
Avoid Misplaced Focus: Visionary leaders often generate dozens of viable ideas. However, every good idea is not an instruction to act.
Filter for the Essential Assignment: Distracting yourself with secondary opportunities pulls energy away from the singular, great assignment God assigned you to complete.
Unplug and Align: True identity requires stepping away from external noise, knowing who God is, and taking every lying thought captive before it dictates your actions.
Stay focused on the calling, align your daily discipline with the Master's voice, and refuse to let good opportunities steal your primary purpose
